Śrī Śrī Gurvāṣṭakam

1.

saṁsāra-dāvānala-līḍha-loka
trāṇāya kāruṇya-ghanāghanatvam
prāptasya kalyāṇa-guṇārṇavasya
vande guroḥ śrī-caraṇāravindam

Synonyms

saṁsāra – material existence; dāvānala – forest fire; ḍha – consumed; loka – the people; trāṇāya – for the deliverance; kāruṇya – of mercy; ghana-āghana-tvam – the quality of a raincloud; prāptasya – who has obtained; kalyāṇa – auspicious; guṇa – qualities; arṇavasya – of the ocean; vande – I offer obeisances; guro – to the guru; śrī-caraṇa-aravindam – the beautiful lotus feet;

Translation

I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of my spiritual master, who is like a raincloud of mercy to extinguish the blazing fire of material existence. He is the ocean of auspicious qualities.

mahāprabhoḥ kīrtana-nṛtya-gīta-
vāditra-mādyan-manaso rasena
romāñca-kampāśru-taraṅga-bhājo
vande guroḥ śrī-caraṇāravindam

Synonyms

mahāprabho – of Mahāprabhu (Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu); kīrtana – chanting (of the holy names); nṛtya – dancing; gīta – singing; vāditra – musical instruments; ādyan – who becomes maddened (intoxicated); manasa – mind; rasena – with (spiritual) mellows or ecstatic emotions; romāñca – horripilation (hair standing on end); kampa – trembling; aśru – tears; taraṅga – waves; bhāja – who is experiencing / endowed with; vande – I offer obeisances; guro – to the guru; śrī-caraṇa-aravindam – the splendid lotus feet;

Translation

I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of my spiritual master, who is always immersed in the ecstatic mood of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu’s kīrtana, dancing, and singing. His mind becomes maddened with spiritual rasa, and he is constantly experiencing symptoms of ecstasy such as horripilation, trembling, and streams of tears.

śrī-vigrahārādhana-nitya-nānā-
śṛṅgāra-tan-mandira-mārjanādau
yuktasya bhaktāṁś ca niyuñjato ’pi
vande guroḥ śrī-caraṇāravindam

Synonyms

śrī-vigraha – the Deity; ārādhana – worship; nitya – daily; nāna – various; śṛṅgāra – decoration; tat – of that (vigraha); mandira – the temple; mārjana-ādau – in cleaning and other such services; yuktasya – who is engaged; bhaktān – the devotees; ca – and; niyuñjata – who engages (them); api – also; vande – I offer obeisances; guroḥ śrī-caraṇāravindam – unto the lotus feet of the guru;

Translation

I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of my spiritual master, who engages his disciples in the regular worship of the Deity with varieties of decorations and in cleaning the temple of the Lord.

catur-vidha-śrī-bhagavat-prasāda-
svādv-anna-tṛptān hari-bhakta-saṅghān
kṛtvaiva tṛptiṁ bhajataḥ sadaiva
vande guroḥ śrī-caraṇāravindam

Synonyms

catur-vidha – four types; śrī-bhagavat-prasāda – Lord’s prasāda; svādu-anna – delicious food; tṛptān – satisfied; hari-bhakta-saṅghān – the assembly of devotees of Hari; kṛtvā – having done; eva – indeed; tṛptim – satisfaction; bhajata – who feels; sadā eva – always; vande guroḥ śrī-caraṇāravindam – I offer obeisances to the lotus feet of the guru;

Translation

I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of my spiritual master, who feels great satisfaction when the devotees of the Lord are served with the four types of delicious Bhagavat-prasāda.

śrī-rādhikā-mādhavayor apāra-
mādhurya-līlā guṇa-rūpa-nāmnām
pratīkṣaṇāsvādana-lolupasya
vande guroḥ śrī-caraṇāravindam

Synonyms

śrī-rādhikā-mādhavayo – of Śrī Rādhā and Mādhava (Krishna); apāra – unlimited; mādhurya – sweetness; līlā – pastimes; guṇa – qualities; rūpa – forms; nāmnām – holy names; prati-kṣaṇa – at every moment; āsvādana – tasting; lolupasya – of one who is eager; vande guroḥ śrī-caraṇāravindam – I offer obeisances to the lotus feet of the guru;

Translation

I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of my spiritual master, who is always eager to relish the unlimited sweet pastimes, qualities, forms, and names of Śrī Śrī Rādhā and Mādhava.

nikuñja-yūno rati-keli-siddhyai
yā yālibhir yuktir apekṣaṇīyā
tatrāti-dākṣyād ati-vallabhasya
vande guroḥ śrī-caraṇāravindam

Synonyms

nikuñja-yūno – of the divine couple in the groves (Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa); rati-keli – amorous pastimes; siddhyai – for the perfection; – whatever; yuktī – arrangements; ālibhi – by the sakhīs (gopīs); apekṣaṇīyā – desirable, needed; tatra – in that; ati-dākṣyāt – due to great expertise; ati-vallabhasya – who is very dear (to them); vande guroḥ śrī-caraṇāravindam – I offer obeisances to the lotus feet of the guru;

Translation

I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of my spiritual master, who is very dear to the gopīs because he is expert in assisting in the confidential pastimes of the Divine Couple within the groves of Vṛndāvana.

sākṣād-dharitvena samasta-śāstrair
uktas tathā bhāvyata eva sadbhiḥ
kintu prabhor yaḥ priya eva tasya
vande guroḥ śrī-caraṇāravindam

Synonyms

sākṣāt – directly; haritvena – as Hari (the Supreme Lord); samasta-śāstrai – by all scriptures; ukta – is said; tathā – also; bhāvyata – is considered; eva – indeed; sadbhi – by the pure devotees; kintu – but; prabho – of the Lord; ya – who; priya – dear; eva – indeed; tasya – of him (the guru); vande guroḥ śrī-caraṇāravindam – I offer obeisances to the lotus feet of the guru

Translation

I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of my spiritual master, who is honored as much as the Supreme Lord by all the scriptures and saintly persons. He is not the Supreme Lord Himself, but a most confidential and dear servant of the Lord.

yasya prasādād bhagavat-prasādo
yasyāprasādān na gatiḥ kuto ’pi
dhyāyaṁ stuvaṁs tasya yaśas tri-sandhyaṁ
vande guroḥ śrī-caraṇāravindam

Synonyms

yasya – of whom (the guru); prasādāt – by the mercy; bhagavat-prasāda – the mercy of the Lord; yasya – whose; aprasādāt – by absence of mercy; na gati – no progress; kutaḥ api – from anywhere; dhyāyan – meditating upon; stuvan – glorifying; tasya – his (the guru’s); yaśa – fame; tri-sandhyam – three times a day; vande guroḥ śrī-caraṇāravindam – I offer obeisances to the lotus feet of the guru

Translation

I offer my respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of my spiritual master. By his mercy one receives the mercy of Kṛṣṇa; without his mercy, one cannot make any progress. Therefore, I meditate on and glorify him three times a day.
